Welcome to the Family, Synergy

So - after my post about wanting a conference laptop - I went out and bought one today. I got myself a nice, large, Dual Core 17″ Jobby. Ok, I’ve realised afterwards that it might be a bit of a gas guzzler, but, at least, as long as I have power, it should meet all my needs. And it’s the first machine that I’ve had where, out of the box, everything works perfectly, and the first where I’ve been able to properly use the Desktop effects (Darn proprietary Video Cards!)

Anyway, along with this - I’ve now installed Ubuntu on it. Actual Ubuntu - rather than Kubuntu. This means that I now have nearly a full shipment of *buntu that I’m regularly using. Kubuntu @ work and on my desktop at home, Xubuntu on the eeePC, and Ubuntu on this new Laptop.

I also had fun thinking up another name for the laptop. I’ve called it synergy. Which basically means lots of small things working together to make something greater in whole than of it’s component parts (Think of two muscles working together to give you a sort of idea) - The reason? Well - partly because my computer naming scheme revolves around the “I can’t be bothered of thinking of a name” (put politely) - and - synergy, is of course, ultimate laziness, putting small things together to make something bigger (convoluted excuse I know!) and well - it completes my having what my idea of the 3 primary WM’s are (Gnome, KDE, and XFCE), and means that my experience of Linux as a whole, is a more rounded and richer experience (Again, convoluted!) but anyway - here are my machines and what I call them (from the newest acquisition to the oldest)

  • Synergy - The new “Conference” Laptop
  • Stupor - My VPS for running the important things on
  • Lethargy - My eeePC
  • Coma - My work PC
  • Anorak - Radio Amarok’s primary server (named after a Radio Amarok inside joke)
  • Torpor - My “playground” VPS (where I keep all the non-critical stuff)
  • Apathy - My Home Desktop

So - those are my machines, but, knowing that I have a similar naming schema to Daniel Silverstone, it begs me to ask.

What do you call your machines and why?

  1. Alex Says:

I name most of my system after bugs. My primary desktop is scorpion and my notebook is wasp. I broke this convention with my secondary desktop, which is called akavir (continent in the Elder Scrolls world). My old notebook is still infected with the Microsoft virus, so it is currently nameless. The servers at the college I attend are named after sci-fi stuff (largely Stargate).

  2. Samir M. Nassar Says:

I name all my computers after planets in the Hainish Cycle the universe Ursula K LeGuin writes many of her books in.

  3. Jon Says:

    Fruit!

mango, lemon, lime, cherry, and oreo (my wife firmly claims it is a fruit, and who am I to argue?)

  4. Aaron Seigo Says:

    freedom, liberty and independence.

naming scheme should be obvious ;)

freedom will likely be decommisioned by the time i get another system so i’ll likely recycle that name. otherwise it’ll be looking for another good word in the freedom family.

  5. Daniel Says:

My names are boring. They are my name + description:

-Main laptop: daniel-ubuntu (a remnant from when it dual-booted with daniel-xp)

    -home desktop: daniel (first computer)

    -server: daniel-server

    Daniel (I like my name.)

  6. Nathan Says:

i name my machines after really nice vocabulary words which begin with the first letter of the sub-distro (urbane, uxorious, erudite, uluru(okay that one is a place name)) and the main file manager/entertainment hub gets called EckenrodeHouse while the router is called UnityBase.

  7. Jakob Petsovits Says:

My single own laptop is named haptik, because
    1. it’s an HP,
    2. it runs KDE,
    3. it feels good (really nice device), and of course
    4. short and to the point.

Best computer name I ever came up with.

  8. kollum Says:

I name my only desktop “localhost” since it’s the default name.

  9. coragonis Says:

I name them after the inventors of their os. My Ubuntu machine is called mark, the MacOS(sorry for this proprietary, im planning to switch to ubuntu on this as well, but i still need a new harddrive) steven, archlinux is called judd and vms have belittling names like markie und juddie, except for the debian machine wich is called debra.

  10. Alex Merry Says:

I named the entire network in our house after errors. The network name is “errata”, and the computers are glitch, illegal-op, segfault, bsod and typo (my laptop). I think there should be another name as well (bsod no longer exists, and I don’t think I reused that name).

The computers at uni are often amusing. Looking through the hosts file for the university network shows themes such as politics (including inhabitations - town, city, village, hamlet - controlling positions/bodies - alderman, legislature, assembly, ambassador, chieftain - as well as misc. things like flag), scientists/mathematicians (darwin, euclid, curie, faraday, hooke), roman gods (vulcan, cupid, saturn), greek gods (apollo is particularly popular), theology (saints, books of the bible, religious terms), emotions, authors (milton, woolf, byron), cartoon / animation characters (dougal, ermintrude, zebedee, garfield, soupdragon, bagpuss), elements (hassium, hydrogen, hafnium), cake-like foods (cream-puff, sticky-bun, donut, jam-tart, battenberg), greek mythical characters (pandora, prometheus), children’s story characters (daffy-duck, wendy, aunt-flo, cool-cat, buzz-lightyear - there’s over 100 in this series in the maths department).

One department (biochemisty) I think has a theme for each section of the department - there are several such as mammals, birds, plants, fish, colours, musical notation, mythical creatures and shapes (pentahedroid, anyone?).

One place where most of the computers have the prefix “bras” has come up with names like “brasknuckles” and “brassbullet”.

The computing department don’t have a theme, just bizarre names like lasting-damange, mustard, evolution and sentinel.

  11. Dan Leinir Turthra Jensen Says:

Mine are named after stellar objects… My network is Universe, the server is Sol (with the drives earth, jupiter and moon), and the laptop is Gamma-Orionis (which is a blue giant - it is considerably more powerful than my server, and it runs KDE… so… ;) ).

  12. Vadim P. Says:

The default name that my serval came with, “ubuntu-laptop”.

  13. Elvis Stansvik Says:

    laptop == pyret [1]
    desktop == rubik [2]
    server == franz [3]

[1] Because it’s tiny 12″ and “pyret” means kind of “little guy” in Swedish.
    [2] Because I love Rubik’s Cube.
[3] Because it used to be located at my book café, which was named Franz after Franz Kafka.

  14. Jeff Fouchard Says:

I name mine after cities in Japan:

    Server / Media Center: Tokyo
    Notebook: Osaka
    Girlfriends’s Notebook: Kyoto
Other things that have changeable hostnames:
    PSP: Ehime
    Router: Hokkaido

Naming started years ago, and Tokyo and Osaka get reused when my main machines switch. I love the culture, and since I can only dream of going there at this point it keeps me focused on my goal.

    Kindest regards,
    Jeff

  15. Neon Says:

‘monolith’ for my main desktop. Because the case I have is black and the thing is huge! So I named it after 2001: A Space Odyssey.

  16. koomi Says:

    discworld characters :D
laptops are always female: angua & ptraci
desktops are male: carrot, twoflower and my router is called vimes

  17. Nicolas Says:

Naming computers? I wish I had enough computers that I could name them.

My old Pentium 2 400MHz was called “Win2000″ (that’s the OS it was running). My Pentium IV 3.0GHz (now in my sister’s room) is “XP1″ (also because it was running WinXP). No idea why the ‘1′, not like I was planning to have a “XP2″ anytime soon. This AMD Athlon dualcore was called “dually” while running Windows; reason being it’s the first dualcore I own. Now it has Kubuntu and I still haven’t bothered to change it from the default ‘ubuntu’ hostname :P

  18. Søren Vind Says:

My home machines are just named after my normal nickname and the function of the computer: peecee-laptop, peecee-media and so on.

For the virtual servers on my server, I have chosen a naming scheme using characters (and possibly places) from the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, giving me names such as:
eddie (host system), arthur, marvin, zaphod

On work, I use a couple of different naming schemes: partly names of algorithms/algorithmists and partly short forms of hosting centre names concatenated with a number.

Quite a long explanation for such a simple question :)

  19. Michael (riddle or theriddle) Says:

I don’t really use a naming scheme, but:
    * The computer plugged into the HDTV: togo (he worked w/Balto)
    * My laptop: clu (a program from Tron)
    * The mac: Manzana (Spanish for apple; not creative)
    * Server: yori (also from Tron)
    * An old computer I just can’t give up: azure (a bluish color)

Also, Synergy is a program as well (yea, runs on Linux): synergy2.sourceforge.net/. You might want to try.

  20. Michael Says:

I don’t really have a scheme for my own computers, but I’ve used various schemes over time:
    * Server: azure (a bluish color)
    * My laptop: clu (Tron)
    * My grandparent’s laptop (Kubuntu): sark (also Tron)
    * Media center computer: togo (an Alaskan sled dog)

  21. David Griffin Says:

I happen to think I have the coolest naming scheme ever, it’s based on the characters from Phillip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy…

serafina: main laptop on my desk (because she can and does travel a long way from home)
grumman: file/web server / bittorrent / media center (strong dependable)
asriel: firewall / router (he opens the bridge to cittagazze in the first novel)
lyra: old desktop (central protagonist == desktop)
iorek: old server (dependable, lyra’s protector/companion)
kaisa: my phone (it is serafina’s daemon)
    will: dad’s ancient (1999) laptop
    roger: family WinXP PC
coulter: windows partition on lyra (cos mrs coulter is evil :) )

I have been thinking of making a cluster for fun for a while, if i get around to it it the master node will be named authority and the slave nodes after the angels in the novel.

I call my network cittagazze which is one of the worlds in the trilogy

Can you tell I procrastinate a lot?

  22. Markino's Blog Says:

  23. Mike Says:

I named mine after mythological figures/places:

Azrael (well, that’s actually Gargamel’s cat, from the Smurfs)
    Ixion,
    Charon,
    Styx,
    Helios,
    Pan,
    Beowulf,
    Nyx

    Freevo is my media computer,
    Tangent is my work server.

  24. Steve Says:

My machines are named after something terrible that can happen to a machine that makes it not work properly. Usually used in the case, “It can be “. I also name my machines in alphabetical order, not reusing letters.

    * crippled - Firewall
    * enervated - Mail server
    * infected - File store
    * jaded - Laptop
    * liquified - Desktop
    * mangled - Colo

  25. Miia Says:

    Winnie the Pooh scheme:

    Kengu - homeserver - Kanga
    Tikru - desktop - Tigger
    Kani - Laptop - Rabbit
    Nasu - Nokia N95 - Piglet
    Puh - Nokia 6021 - Pooh
    Ruu - Nokia IT 770 - Roo

    PuolenHehtaarinMetsä - WPA2 ESSID - HalfAcreWoods

  26. Stalwart Says:

I have no particular scheme, but i like naming computers =)

angel - my previous desktop pc
fuaran - laptop named after spellbook from book “Night Watch”. It empowered me in college =)
naga - laptop that gave me constant headaches until i sold it. I shouldn’t name computers after evil mythological creatures anymore
delta - my current desktop pc, delta is greek name for number “4″, count of cpu cores in this box
blink - my nokia n810 handheld, named after song by Infected Mushroom

  27. Kevin Says:

Blackbox - My primary desktop with a black case, previosly also had Whitebox and Creambox.
TV - the media center PC that sits below my TV.
Brick - external hard drive I use for dual booting my work laptop
Laptop - Take a guess (actually my wifes laptop now)
    klaptop - Kevin’s laptop

  28. Malc Says:

Mine (all currently running openSuSE 10.2 & KDE 3.5.9) are all named after characters in The Flintstones cartoon series…

    Fred
    Wilma
Pebbles (desktop/file backup - the rest are laptops)
    Bamm-Bamm
    Dino

WLAN SSID is “Flintstones” (as it keeps the show on the road).

  29. John CC Says:

Mine were always named after AI’s or robots from SF.

    I’ve had:-
    Neuromancer
    Continuity
    Wintermute
    Slave
    Zen
    Proteus
    Colossus
    Gort
    Orac

One big exception is my home desktop which through various hardware forms has always been called “liberator”, which was the ship from Blake’s 7 not the computer which ran it. Another couple of exceptions were one called lazarus (a resurrected machine .. what else?) and one called kline.

  30. Kaithar Says:

Ah, computer names … I couldn’t resist, even if I am a little late.

Lets see, this, my main desktop is named Nymph.
It dualboots in to Norad and Wopr for gaming. Stupid games that only run on windows.

My other half’s computer is named Angel, which is unfortunate cause it’s anything but at times.
Looking in that direction I can also see our Dell laptop, named Shiny. It’s all silver and white and shiny :p

Looking the other way I see my cabs…
First we have Rocky, my router… I knew he was in with a bad crowd.
Below him we have Leo, named in honour of an old flame.
Then we have a box I used to colo named Pyro … which really isn’t apropriate cause it was anything but hot.
And finally in the bottom of that cab we have a pair of DEC Alphas … A friend of mine helped when those were set up, they’re named Jessica and Gabriel because they were somewhat difficult to convince to do what we wanted them to do.

In the other cab we have Phoenix, named such because it getting resurrected and repurposed over and over.
In there we also have Glomp and Fluffles, a pair of old proliants.

Looking a little further over we have Sanity … a paticularly strange machine that sorely tried my patience when I originally set it up.

I also have an desktop named Shadows that was, so far as I can remember, my first desktop machine not to be beige or cream or some other disgustingly boring colour.

    Some machines from the past.
I named a pair of laptops Trogdor and Mercury.
I had a stange little machine that was mostly scsi based and incredibly uncoperative that earned the name Troll.
One machine was so over clocked and possesed so many fans that it was named Fireblade.
I had a machine which booted from a hard drive caddy that had each drive named after a different draconic body part, though Dragonsfire saw the most boot time.

I actually compiled a list of names so I wasn’t stuck thinking one up when I was installing.
When you’ve had as many strong personality machines as I knocking around you start to get creative with the namings hehe.
